AI Winners: The Power Lies in the Details

AI Industry
Imagine a tool so powerful that it could transform your business as much as the internet did. AI is shaping up to be at least as impactful as the internet — but what does that mean for people, companies, and industries trying to hop on the train? History has shown us that those who misused or missed the internet wave ended up at the bottom, while those who found the correct fit for the internet in their businesses thrived. Similarly, understanding how to leverage AI effectively will be crucial for staying ahead in the competitive landscape.
The Rise of AI
These days, the magic buzzword "AI" mostly refers to generative AI, like ChatGPT or image models like Stable Diffusion. However, the broader category of AI, including traditional machine learning (recommendation systems, search algorithms, etc.), already has a firm grasp on each and every one of us. AI controls our social media feeds, Amazon searches, and Google Maps routes. We even talk to AI through Siri and Alexa.
Why is the newest iteration of AI in the form of language and image models so disruptive? Simply put, this new technology has the potential to perform tasks traditionally reserved for humans. Search engines or routing algorithms are powerful, but humans always had the high ground in creative thinking, expression, and interaction. While we are not yet at the point where human work will be entirely replaced by AI, we are at the point where we can gain superpowers using AI: increased efficiency, decision-making support, high-speed analysis, greater depths of knowledge — the list goes on.
Learning from the Internet Boom
The advent of the internet provided a similar opportunity for supercharged work through communication, presence, and scope — and we haven't experienced a technological disruption of this magnitude since then. I use the word "disruption" deliberately because the internet showed us that technology has the ability to shake the economic landscape. Companies slow to correctly adopt the internet found their positions compromised, regardless of their size.
How did the internet change the business landscape? The internet changed how we communicated, advertised, and conducted business. It expanded the horizons of what a company could achieve and who it could help. Some businesses thrived during the early periods, some floundered, and some newcomers cemented their positions (Microsoft, Amazon, etc.).
The Specifics Matter
With vivid memories of internet success stories and casualties, everyone seems to be rushing to incorporate AI to avoid being left behind. But how many times have you looked at AI integrated into a product and thought, "Is this even useful?" or "Why do I need that?"
The truth is, generative AI is a powerful tool that needs to be applied correctly. Just as you wouldn't use a chainsaw to clip your fingernails, throwing a large language model or other generative AI solutions at every problem is misguided. Current AI applications can be boiled down to one category: efficiency. We now have the capability to do, see, and think more efficiently
Thoughtful Integration is Key
Just as the dust settled during the internet boom to reveal its true advantages and necessities, the productive uses of generative AI in each industry will become clear over time. Those who misused or missed the internet wave ended up at the bottom, while those who found the correct fit for the internet in their businesses thrived.
So, how can businesses avoid missteps with AI?
Identify Specific Needs: Assess where AI can genuinely enhance efficiency in your operations.
Pilot Programs: Start with small, controlled AI implementations to test effectiveness.
Learn and Adapt: Continuously learn from these implementations and adapt strategies accordingly.
Conclusion: It's Not Just About AI — It's About How Humans Use AI
It's crucial to rush towards understanding and correctly using new technologies like AI. The faster we reach this point, the quicker we can achieve significant advancements. By becoming more efficient in our work, we can focus on the one resource AI won't be able to help with (yet): time.
